storm advice from Sharon Deleasa

September 3rd, 2010

As of this time Earl has been designated as a tropical storm for our area. lt will be a fast moving storm arriving Thursday night into Friday. The forecast for Saturday, Sunday and Monday is sunny skies.

There are currently no evacuation plans for Fire lsland. However there are heavy rains and winds predicted. The wind will cause the most damage. Please secure your house.

1. The outdoor furniture is the most dangerous to our safety. Please take down all umbrellas and wedge them somewhere safe. They act as missiles and can cause damage. Store light weight chairs in the outdoor shower and what ever else you can fit in there Obviously take in all cushions into the house. Turn over the outdoor table on the deck. The table can smash up against the deck railings and break.

2. Place your garbage cans under the house if you can. lf not wedge them into a corner on your deck.

3. We may lose electrical power for a time. Have some candles ready. Have pitchers or bottles of water in the kitchen on the counter. Open it as little as possible. Plan a non-cooking menu for Friday into
Saturday. Most stoves here are electric so you won’t be able to cook inside if there isn’t power. lf you have a cooler, you may want to store ice in it.

No Ocean Lifeguards on Friday, Sept. 3

Good Morning – Chief Cherveny has been notified that due to the incoming storm, there will be no ocean lifeguards until further notice. If the storm passes as quickly as predicted, we hope to see them back on duty later this weekend.

Fire Island National Seashore General Management Plan (GMP) Planning Meetings in August

Preliminary Management Alternatives Reviewed 8/20 and 8/21 on Fire Island,Fire Island National Seashore Superintendent Chris Soller announced that the National Park Service (NPS) will host public General Management Plan (GMP) meetings this August in two communities on Fire Island.

Friday, August 20, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Whyte Hall, 577 Coast Guard Walk in Fire Island Pines (Take ferry from Sayville to Fire Island Pines)

Saturday, August 21, 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Ocean Beach Community House, 153 Bay Walk in Ocean Beach (Take ferry from Bay Shore to Ocean Beach)

These meetings will be organized as open houses during which the public will have the opportunity to learn about the proposed preliminary management alternatives. Park planners and managers will be on hand to answer questions and to accept public comments. Refreshments will be served.

Summaries of four preliminary alternatives are described in a newsletter that is available on-line at
www.nps.gov/fiis/parkmgmt/generalmanagementplan.htm.

Copies of the newsletter are available in the August 6 edition of the Fire Island Tide and at NPS offices and facilities.

Public input is critical at this point to assist the National Park Service in refining the alternatives for presentation in a formal draft General
Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement (GMP/EIS), and the identification of the NPS preferred alternative. The public comment period for the preliminary management alternatives opened on April 24; comments will be accepted through September 06, 2010.

Comments about the preliminary management alternatives may be submitted through several avenues.
