Each year the the Fire District has an election for one of the fire commissioner seats. This year the seat currently held by Julie Lokin is up for election. He has not yet indicated if he will be running for re-election.

The only requirement to be eligible to run for fire commissioner is that you are over 21, and a Fair Harbor resident (one way to qualify is to be a registered voter in Fair Harbor). You do not have to be a member of the fire department, or have any fire fighting experience.

Anyone interested in running for commissioner simply needs to inform the District Secretary that they wish to be a candidate.

This year as in past years the election will be held on the second Tuesday in December; candidates do no need to be present on the day of the vote. Starting next year the elections will be held in July.

The last date by which you must inform the District that you wish to be a candidate is November 23, 2011.

If you are interested in running for commissioner please contact District Secretary:
Kathy Chinkel – kchinkel@gmail.com

ABSENTEE BALLOTS
Any registered voter who wants to request an absentee ballot needs to get an application for an absentee ballot request form, from the Suffolk County Board of Elections (or print the attachment). Fill out the application; send it to the Fire District Secretary at the mailing address for the Fire District:

Fair Harbor Fire District
PO Box 5492
Bay Shore, NY 11706.

When the application is received the District Secretary will at the appropriate time, send the voter an absentee ballot. If you have any questions, contact:
Kathy Chinkel – kchinkel@gmail.com

From Scott Cherveny:
Suffolk county fire rescue will be conducting an “Urban Search and Rescue” drill this weekend on Fire Island. Please inform the community as to why they may encounter uniformed troops on utility vehicles, military boats, and air support.

Most people participating in the drill have never been on Fire Island. We [island fire departments] made it especially clear to them that the weather is supposed to be good, as a result, many people. They will exercise caution and drive slow.
Here is their message:
As a heads up, Suffolk County FRES will be conducting a drill with their Urban Search and Rescue Team on Saturday Oct. 8th. They will be stationed out of the Coast Guard station and will be using GPS to conduct searches in designated spots in OB, Saltaire and POW. They should not need any interaction from us except for a few contacts that have already been notified. They will have four or five groups of three or four traveling by quads, trucks, boats and helicopter. All vehicles are clearly marked. Just be aware they may be coming thru your area.
