FAQs

Do I have to be a homeowner to register to vote in Fair Harbor?
No, New York State law allows people to register to vote wherever they have an economic or social relationship. That means renters, along with homeowners, can vote in Fair Harbor. It also means that all children over 18 can register to vote and participate in any referendums.

Does this affect my permanent address for tax purposes?
No. Voter registration is not a proxy for your residence for tax purposes.

Does this affect my right to my rent-regulated apartment?
No. Where you actually spend most nights each year, as well as the address on your tax return and where your children go to school, is more important.

How long do I have to remain a FH registered voter?
You can register at another address any time that you want, as often as you want. New York State has no rules about how often you may switch your voter registration, nor any rules about how long you must remain a voter in any location. There are some cut-off dates that may apply to specific elections.

What happens to my voting rights if I remain registered in FH?
You can vote in all federal and New York State elections (Governor, etc.) and all Town of Islip elections. In addition, you can vote for the member of Congress and for state legislators who represent Suffolk County and Islip. You will not be able to vote for the state senator or assembly member at your other address, a member of Congress from a different Congressional district, or for Mayor or City Council unless you re-register elsewhere after voting in Fair Harbor and prior to the next election.

Do I have to go in person to Ocean Beach to vote if I'm registered in Fair Harbor?
No, you can vote by absentee ballot in all regular elections. Currently, you can vote in Fair Harbor Fire District referendums by absentee ballot as well.

Am I going to get into trouble if I register to vote in Fair Harbor?
The only way you could get into trouble is if you are registered in two places at the same time AND vote in two different places in the same election.
